AIRCRAFT TECHNOLOGIES GROUP (ATG) holds Pacific Northwest Aero Skills Regional Finals
Kelowna, BC – ATG has officially kicked-off the 2019 Aero Skills Tournament series with a successful event at the Downtown Kelowna Block Party on Saturday July 13th, 2019. Aero Skills Tournament please visit: www.myATG.aero/schools/tournaments
Thousands attended the Kelowna Block Party, where 100s of people crowded in to see what all the noise and cheering was as technicians from KF Aerospace, the Royal Canadian Air Force and other aviation industry companies demonstrated their skills for the Top Gun Title and the Exhibition Team events.
Competitors overcame the hot Kelowna sun and some minor (leaks) injuries to successfully assemble their sheet metal projects striving to be named the aircraft structures ‘Top Gun’ of Aero Skills III (2019/2020), North West Region.
For the Aircraft Structures (or sheet metal as some like to call it) Top Gun competition, where the winner wins a trip to Las Vegas for the Nationals, the competitors were required to fabricate and build their sheet metal project; riveting it together head to head, in front of the audience. Finalists had to disassemble and then reassemble (re-rivet) again for final points.
The 1st place winners from the two categories received a cash prize and will move on to the Aero Skills finals in Las Vegas next February. Here are the “Top Gun” tournament winners:
Junior Class:
1st – Jamie Rynard
2nd – Kalpesh Patel
3rd – Noah Byers
Senior Class:
1st – Gaby Rodriguez
2nd – Mike Marshal
3rd – Dan Audy
This event is the first of eight regional events that will take place across North America this summer and fall. One competitor from Cold Lake, Alberta, “We had a great time at the event, as we learned some useful tips and tricks from talking to and seeing how the other competitors completed their tasks that we can carry over into our careers and have been talking highly about the event to anyone that asks us about it.”
Corporal Jonathan Cook, Aircraft Maintenance Technician, Royal Canadian Air Force
Over $70,000 in cash prizes and 16 trips to Las Vegas will be awarded. These events are free to enter and are open to technicians of all experience levels including students under training. Registration is now open for our remaining tournaments.
For the Exhibition Team competition, Junior and Senior competitors were randomly matched up to compete in four events that included Rivet Shoot; Clean Cut, making a precise cut in a skin; Rivet Removal, removing rivets they put in; and Around the Corner, removing rivets in awkward locations. The winners were determined based on the quality of their work and their time for completion. Overall Winners of the Exhibition Events was Team Campbell / Patel. Congrats!
ATG holds eight Regional Aero Skills competitions to provide a venue for technicians to demonstrate their capabilities and to network with like minded people from the aviation community. The goal of these events is to raise awareness of the trade and create excitement in order to encourage young people to consider a career as an aviation technician.
